In short

Published UK SEO prices mostly sit between £350 and £1,000 a month, with budget offers from about £99 and established agencies charging £1,500 to £5,000 or more. The right budget depends on how competitive your trade and area are, how many locations you cover, and how much work your website needs. Cheap is not always bad and expensive is not always good: what matters is what is actually done each month.

“How much does SEO cost?” is one of the first questions every business owner asks, and one of the hardest to get a straight answer to. Many agencies hide their prices, quotes vary wildly, and it is hard to compare a £150 package with a £1,500 one when both promise “more traffic”.

This guide gives you the real price ranges in the UK for 2026, explains what drives the cost up or down, and shows you what you should expect to get for your money. It also covers the warning signs that tell you to walk away.

Typical SEO prices in the UK in 2026

The most useful recent data comes from a study of 45 published monthly SEO prices from 16 UK providers, collected in June 2026. It found three clear price bands:

Price band Typical monthly price What it usually means
Budget £99 to £300 A fixed list of small tasks, often automated reports and a few listings or links.
Mainstream £350 to £1,000 Regular hands-on work: fixes, content, local SEO and reporting for one business or area.
Established agency £1,500 to £5,000+ Bigger teams, more content and outreach, several locations or national competition.

The middle (median) price across all 45 was £799 a month, and the median entry-level package was £447 a month.

These are published list prices, so treat them as a guide rather than a quote. Many providers, including us, prefer to look at your business first, because two businesses in the same town can need very different amounts of work.

The three ways SEO is usually charged

1. Monthly retainer

This is the most common model. You pay a set amount each month and the agency works on your site, your Google Business Profile and your content on an ongoing basis. SEO builds up over months, so a retainer fits how it actually works.

2. One-off projects

Some work has a clear start and end: an SEO audit, a website move, a fix for a technical problem, or setting up a Google Business Profile properly. These are usually priced as a single fee.

3. Hourly or day rates

Consultants and freelancers sometimes charge by the hour or day for advice, training or specific tasks. This suits businesses with someone in-house who can do the day-to-day work.

What makes SEO cost more (or less)

When an agency gives you a price, it is really estimating how much work it will take to get you results. These are the things that change that estimate:

  • How competitive your trade is. “Emergency plumber London” is a far harder fight than “dog groomer in Livingston”. More competition means more content, more links and more time.
  • How many places you want to rank in. One town is simpler than ten. Each new area usually needs its own page and its own local signals.
  • The state of your website. A slow site, broken pages or thin content need fixing before anything else works. Sometimes the website itself is the biggest job.
  • How much content you need. Service pages, location pages and helpful articles take time to write well. Our content writing is often the biggest part of a monthly plan.
  • Links and mentions. Earning genuine links from local and industry websites is slow, careful work. Link building done properly costs more than buying cheap links, but it does not put your site at risk.
  • Local or national. Local SEO for a single area usually costs less than competing across the whole country.

What you should get at each level

What you usually get from UK SEO packages at budget, mainstream and established agency level

What you usually get at each level. Ranges, not quotes.

Under £300 a month

At this level the work has to be quick, so it is often a set list of tasks: some directory listings, a few small fixes, a monthly report. That can help a very small business in a quiet area. Ask exactly what is done each month, and who does it.

£350 to £1,000 a month

This is where most local businesses sit. You should expect a real person looking after your account, regular work on your website and Google Business Profile, new or improved pages, review growth and a clear monthly report that shows calls, enquiries and rankings.

£1,500 a month and above

Larger budgets suit businesses with several branches, national ambitions or very competitive markets. Expect more content each month, active outreach for links and press, and deeper reporting.

Tip: Compare packages by the work done, not the price. Ask each provider: “What exactly will you do in month one, month two and month three?” A good answer is specific.

Red flags: when cheap SEO gets expensive

Red flags when choosing an SEO provider: guaranteed rankings, bulk backlinks, long contracts, secret methods, reports with no enquiries

Five warning signs to watch for.

The real cost of bad SEO is not the monthly fee. It is the months of lost time, and sometimes a Google penalty that takes even longer to undo. Walk away if you hear any of these:

  • “We guarantee number one on Google.” Google itself says no one can guarantee a top ranking.
  • “Hundreds of backlinks a month.” Bulk links from low-quality sites can harm your rankings.
  • A long contract with no way out. Good agencies keep clients by getting results, not by locking them in.
  • “Our methods are secret.” You should always know what is being done to your website.
  • Reports full of rankings for words nobody searches for. Ask how many calls and enquiries came in.

How to choose the right SEO budget

  1. Work out what a new customer is worth to you. If one new client is worth £2,000 a year, a few extra enquiries a month can easily cover your SEO.
  2. Check what your competitors are doing. Search for your main service and your town. Who shows up in the map and the top results? The stronger they are, the more work you will need.
  3. Start with the basics. A fast website, a complete Google Business Profile and clear service pages come first. Our local SEO checklist shows you where to start.
  4. Give it time. Most businesses see early movement in the first three months and stronger results between six and twelve months.
  5. Measure enquiries, not just rankings. Track calls, form fills and bookings. That is the number that pays for SEO.

Should you do SEO yourself?

You can do a lot yourself if you have the time: set up and update your Google Business Profile, ask every happy customer for a review, and write clear pages about each service you offer. Many owners start this way.

The trouble is time. Running a business leaves little of it, and the technical parts (site speed, structure, schema, tracking) are easy to get wrong. A common middle ground is to get an expert plan and do some of the simple tasks in-house.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?

Most published UK SEO packages cost between £350 and £1,000 a month. Budget offers start at around £99, and established agencies usually charge £1,500 to £5,000 or more. A 2026 study of 45 published UK prices found a median of £799 a month.

How much does local SEO cost for a small business?

Local SEO for one business in one town usually sits at the lower to middle end of the market, because there is less competition than national SEO. The price rises with each extra location and with how competitive your trade is.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Sometimes. A low-cost package can help a very small business in a quiet area. Be careful of offers that promise guaranteed rankings or hundreds of links, because poor-quality links can harm your site and cost more to fix later.

How long before SEO pays for itself?

Most businesses see early movement within the first three months and stronger results between six and twelve months. Track calls, form fills and bookings so you can see the return clearly.

Why do some agencies not publish their prices?

Because the work needed varies so much between businesses. A plumber in a small town and a law firm in London need very different amounts of work. Many agencies, including NexGen Rank, look at your business first and then send a written proposal.
