In short

An impression means your page appeared in a set of search results someone saw, not that they noticed it. High impressions with almost no clicks usually means one of three things: you are ranking too low (page 2 and beyond gets very few clicks), you are showing for the wrong searches, or your title and description do not make people want to click. Search Console shows you which one it is.

You open Google Search Console and see thousands of impressions. Then you look at clicks: a handful. It feels like Google is showing your website to lots of people and every one of them is ignoring it.

This is one of the most common things we see when we look at a new client’s site, and the reason is rarely a mystery. Here is what is really going on and how to fix it.

What impressions and clicks actually mean

What "lots of impressions, few clicks" looks like in Search Console. Example data.
  • Impression: your page appeared in search results that someone loaded. They may not have scrolled down to it or noticed it.
  • Click: someone clicked through to your website from Google.
  • CTR (click-through rate): clicks divided by impressions.
  • Average position: where your page typically appeared, averaged across all the searches it showed for.

That last point matters. An average position of 40 might mean you are 8th for a few searches and 90th for hundreds of others.

7 reasons you get impressions but no clicks

1. You are ranking on page 2 or lower

This is the most common reason by far. Very few people go past the first page of results. If your average position is above 10, most of your impressions are coming from searches where you are simply too far down to be clicked. The fix here is not your title: it is improving the page so it ranks higher.

2. You are showing for the wrong searches

Your page might appear for searches that are close to what you do but not quite right: a different town, a different service, or someone looking for information rather than a business. Those searchers will never click, because you are not what they want.

3. Your title does not match what people searched

If someone searches “boiler repair Leeds” and your result says “Home – Smith & Co”, they have no reason to choose you. Titles that clearly say the service, the area and a reason to pick you get far more clicks.

4. Your description gives no reason to click

Google often shows the meta description under your title. “Welcome to our website” wastes that space. Say what you do, who for, and what happens next. Google can rewrite descriptions, but a good one is still used often.

5. Google is answering the question on the results page

For simple questions, Google may show the answer directly: an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a “People also ask” box. People get what they need without clicking. For local businesses, the map pack can also take most of the clicks before anyone scrolls to the normal results.

6. Ads and the map pack push you down

On many local searches, ads and the map can fill the whole first screen on a phone. Even a position-5 result can be out of sight. Being in the map pack as well as the normal results makes a big difference.

7. Your brand name is not known yet

People are more likely to click names they recognise. Reviews, a complete Google Business Profile and showing up repeatedly all build that familiarity over time.

How to find your problem in Search Console

What to do by average position: 1 to 5 rewrite titles, 6 to 20 improve the page, 20 plus match the search
Group your top searches by average position.
  1. Open Performance → Search results and switch on all four boxes: clicks, impressions, CTR and position.
  2. Set the date range to the last 3 months.
  3. Open the Queries tab and sort by Impressions.
  4. Look at the position column for your top searches and put each one into a group below.
Average position What it means What to do
1 to 5 You are visible. Low clicks means your result is not appealing, or Google is answering on the page. Rewrite the title and description. Add FAQ content.
6 to 20 You are close. Small improvements can move you onto page one or to the top of it. Improve the page content, add internal links, strengthen it with reviews and links.
20+ Too low to get clicks. The page may not match the search, or the site lacks authority. Check the page really answers that search. Consider a dedicated page for it.

Then open the Pages tab to see which pages earn impressions. Often one page is showing for dozens of different searches because there is no better page on your site for them.

How to fix it, step by step

Write titles that win the click

  • Put the main service and the place near the start: “Emergency Plumber in Doncaster”.
  • Add a reason to choose you: “Same-Day Call-Outs”, “Family Run Since 2005”, “Free Quotes”.
  • Keep it to about 60 characters so it is not cut off.
  • Write a different title for every page.

Write descriptions that answer “why you?”

In about 150 characters, say what you do, where, and what the reader should do next. Use the words people actually search for.

Give each search a page that matches it

If one page is trying to rank for “SEO”, “local SEO”, “SEO audit” and “SEO in Bolton”, it will struggle with all of them. Separate pages for each main service and location help Google send the right people to the right place.

Improve the pages stuck on page 2

Add more helpful detail, answer common questions, add photos and examples, and link to the page from other relevant pages on your site. Our on-page SEO work focuses on exactly this.

Fix technical problems

Slow pages, pages Google cannot index properly, and duplicate pages competing with each other all hold rankings back. A technical SEO check finds these quickly.

Be patient after changes. Google needs time to re-crawl your pages and test new titles. Compare the same length of time before and after (for example, 28 days each), not day by day.

When impressions rise but clicks do not, it can be good news

Rising impressions often mean Google is starting to trust your site and test it for more searches. That is the first step. With the right pages and titles, those impressions can turn into clicks over the following months.

It is also worth knowing that more people now ask AI tools for recommendations. Our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT and AI search covers what helps there.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good click-through rate on Google?

It depends heavily on your position and the type of search. Results near the top of page one get far more clicks than lower ones. Compare your CTR for each search with your average position, rather than with a single target number.

Why are my impressions going up but clicks staying the same?

Usually because Google is showing your pages for more searches, but mostly in low positions. It can be an early sign of progress. Improving those pages so they reach page one is what turns impressions into clicks.

Does Google count an impression if nobody scrolls to my result?

Yes. An impression is counted when your result appears in the results someone loads, even if they do not scroll down far enough to see it.

Can changing my page title really increase clicks?

Yes, if you are already on page one. A clear title that matches the search and gives a reason to choose you can win more clicks from the same position. If you rank on page two or lower, you need to improve the page itself first.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

They can for simple questions, because people get an answer without clicking. Searches where people want to hire someone, such as “electrician near me”, still lead to plenty of calls and clicks, especially from the map pack.
