In short

Google Ads puts you at the top of search results within days, but you pay for every click and the calls stop when the budget does. SEO takes months to build, but the visits keep coming without paying per click. Most local businesses do best by using ads for quick enquiries while SEO grows, then leaning on SEO as it takes over.

When you want more customers from Google, you have two main options: pay for ads, or earn your place in the free results with SEO. Both work. They just work very differently, and the right choice depends on your business, your budget and how quickly you need enquiries.

The quick difference

Ads appear in labelled spots; SEO works on the free results and the map.
  • Google Ads (PPC): you bid to appear in the “Sponsored” spots at the top and bottom of the page, and pay each time someone clicks.
  • SEO: you improve your website, Google Business Profile and reputation so Google ranks you in the free results and the map pack. You do not pay per click.

Side-by-side comparison

Google Ads SEO
Speed Live within days Early movement in about 3 months, stronger results in 6 to 12
Cost model Pay for every click, plus management Pay for the work; no charge per click
When you stop paying Ads and calls stop straight away Rankings fade slowly, often over months
Control Choose exact searches, areas, times and budget Less direct control; Google decides rankings
Trust Marked “Sponsored”; some people skip ads Many people trust free results and reviews more
Testing Great for testing new services or areas quickly Slow to test; better for long-term growth
Best for Fast leads, new businesses, seasonal offers Steady leads, lower cost per enquiry over time

When to start with Google Ads

  • You need enquiries now. A new business, a quiet month or a new van on the road.
  • Your website is new. New sites take time to rank. Ads bring traffic while SEO builds up.
  • You offer emergency services. People searching “emergency locksmith” call the first business they trust. Being at the top matters.
  • You want to test. Not sure if a new service or town will work? Ads tell you within weeks.
  • Your offer is seasonal. Boiler servicing before winter, garden work in spring.

When to start with SEO

  • You can wait a few months. SEO is an investment that builds over time.
  • Your clicks would be expensive. In competitive trades such as law, finance or emergency trades, paying for every click adds up quickly. SEO lowers your cost per enquiry over time.
  • You already have reviews and a decent website. You have a head start; SEO builds on it.
  • You want to own your visibility. Rankings you earn keep working without a daily budget.

Remember the map pack. For local searches, the map with three businesses is often the most clicked part of the page. You cannot buy a better spot in the normal map results; that comes from local SEO. Google does also sell ads that can appear in and around the map.

Why the best answer is often “both, in stages”

For most local businesses we work with, the strongest plan looks like this:

A three-stage plan: ads bring calls in months 1 to 3, SEO starts lifting in months 3 to 6, SEO takes over from month 6
Using ads and SEO together, in stages.
  1. Months 1 to 3: run focused Google Ads on your most profitable services and areas to bring in enquiries straight away. At the same time, fix your website and Google Business Profile.
  2. Months 3 to 6: keep ads running while SEO starts to lift your rankings. Use the ads data to see which searches bring the best customers, and focus SEO on those.
  3. Months 6 to 12 and beyond: as free rankings grow, reduce ad spend on searches where you now rank well. Keep ads for emergencies, busy seasons and competitive searches.

Ads also feed your SEO with real data: which words lead to calls, which areas are profitable and which pages turn visitors into customers.

Mistakes to avoid with Google Ads

  • Sending ads to your home page. Send people to a page about the exact service they searched for.
  • Broad targeting. Without negative keywords and the right areas, you pay for clicks from people who will never buy.
  • No call or form tracking. If you cannot see which clicks became enquiries, you cannot improve.
  • Set and forget. Ads need weekly checks to stay profitable.

Mistakes to avoid with SEO

  • Giving up after six weeks. SEO needs months, not weeks.
  • Chasing rankings instead of enquiries. Rank for what your customers search for, not for vanity words.
  • Cheap link packages. They can do more harm than good. See our guide to what SEO costs in the UK for the red flags.

Do not lose the enquiries you pay for

Whichever you choose, every missed call and slow reply wastes money. If calls go unanswered while you are on a job, a CRM that texts missed callers back and chases quotes for you can make both SEO and ads work harder. That is why we built Lidora CRM; read how missed calls cost local businesses jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO better than Google Ads?

Neither is better for every business. Google Ads brings enquiries quickly but costs money for every click. SEO takes longer but keeps bringing visits without paying per click. Many local businesses use both: ads for quick results and SEO for long-term growth.

Does running Google Ads help my SEO rankings?

No, paying for ads does not directly improve your free rankings. Ads can help indirectly by showing you which searches and pages bring the best customers, so you can focus your SEO on them.

How quickly does Google Ads work?

Ads can start showing within days once your account is set up and approved. It usually takes a few weeks of data and adjustments to make a campaign properly profitable.

Can I stop SEO once I rank well?

You can, but rankings usually slip over time as competitors keep working and Google changes. Many businesses keep a lighter level of SEO going to protect what they have built.

Which is better for an emergency trade like a locksmith or plumber?

Usually both. Emergency searches lead to fast calls, so appearing at the top with ads helps straight away, while local SEO and reviews get you into the map pack, where many emergency calls come from.
